PESHAWAR: On Wednesday, a gas explosion at a coal mine in a northwest region killed nine workers, according to a government official. A team looking into the incident determined that gas sparks were what triggered the explosion.
According to Adnan Farid, the area deputy commissioner, there were 13 workers in the mine at the time, and nine bodies were found. He stated that the other four miners, who were pulled from the debris, are in critical condition.
The explosion occurred "due to gas sparks inside the mine," according to a government team from the mining development department that examined the scene of the disaster, Orakzai district police head Nazeer Khan told Reuters.
According to a government assessment obtained by Reuters, the mine collapsed as a result of the bomb, which was set off by a gas buildup. What kind of gas it was wasn't made clear.
The Afghan border's northwest Orakzai district has coal resources, and mine mishaps there are frequent, mostly because of methane buildups. According to labour union leaders, mine workers have long complained that a lack of safety equipment and unsafe working conditions are the main reasons for frequent accidents.
