New twist for man who transferred $71,400 to wrong account | A Current Affair

We recently brought you the story of pensioner gordon layton he was facing the prospect of losing his home after accidentally transferring money to the wrong person tonight some good news ron stackenberg chris allen from the current affair ron can we ask you about the charge you're facing in court today he's the building certifier police alleged took money that was mistakenly transferred into his account it's been alleged.

You stole seventy thousand dollars from gordon a pensioner well obviously i wasn't pleased does this make you angry yes it does 88 year old gordon layton has every right to be angry he thought he'd paid for his house but it's alleged gordon mistakenly paid the man who certified the plans instead can you tell us anything about that did you steal that money ron police have charged ron stackenberg with stealing here he's just faced court for the first time that money allegedly went into your business account and then disappeared do you know where the money

went wrong.

This is an 88 year old pensioner's money that means if if we don't get it back my father has to sell his house to to be able to pay the debt how is that fair jackie morrison white is gordon's daughter she says within two hours of her dad making the mistake she contacted his bank ing and the bank where the money landed anz to stop the payment but in the end.

Banks said they couldn't stop the money being taken out this has caused gordon a world of pain is there anything you'd like to say to him or his family.

Gordon says because he lost the money he was going to use to pay for his new home the company which sold him the house and moved it here were demanding their payment even threatening to sell the property from under him if he didn't pay them back finally the family managed to pool their resources and set up a gofundme page and get rid of that debt

so that's one less thing gordon has to worry about.

88 old says it was a huge relief yes so gordon has this restored your faith in humanity after all that you've been through i've always believed that people are basically uh generous at heart and kick in and give your mate a hand that's that sort of attitude is the australian attitude.

Daughter says I think the story really resonated with a lot of people because a lot of us have got elderly family and friend.

As well as calling us jackie continued demanding answers from the banks believing they could have done more to stop the funds from disappearing and finally it paid off the anz bank has reached out to to us directly and they have said that you know they felt that there was a few internal processes of theirs that perhaps could have been carried out a little better and so  they've actually agreed to reimburse my dad a significant amount of of the 71 400 so quite a significant amount not all of it but certainly a huge amount of that 71 400 is coming back from the anz and we we can't thank them enough in a statement a spokesperson for anz says anz is pleased. We were able to assist mr leighton recover a substantial amount of the funds that were mistakenly transferred i was obviously pleased and surprised because it's not often that banks are so generous but.

I thought very good thank you very much how do you intend to plead to the charge ron can you tell us that ron stackenberg will be back in court on october 18th while gordon can finally finish off his renovation and move in it look it's been a great outcome.

I can't thank a current affair enough because you you got involved and help us get our story out there a big thank you to everyone that's physically or morally or financially helped me i just say thank.
